The wife of the Kryptonian scientist Zor-El and the mother of Supergirl. Since Zor-El and Superman's father, Jor-El, are brothers, Alura—also rendered Allura—is Superman's aunt (Act No. 252/2, May 1959: "The Supergirl from Krypton!").
When the planet Krypton explodes into fragments, Alura In-Ze and Zor-El—who have not yet married—and the other inhabitants of Argo City survive the death of their planet when their entire city was hurled into space intact by the force of the cataclysm. For years, the orphaned city drifts through space as life returns to an uneasy normalcy for the Kryptonian survivors. Zor-El and Alura become husband and wife, and in time a blond baby, Kara, is born to the couple.
Not long after Kara has reached her teens, the entire population of Argo City succumbs to deadly Anti-Kryptonite poisoning, but not before Zor-El has placed his daughter in a space rocket and launched her toward Earth, where she acquires super-powers and achieves worldwide fame as Supergirl. Alura and Zor-El survive the death of Argo City by escaping into the so-called Survival Zone, an alien dimension from which Supergirl finally frees them in early 1964 (Act No. 309/2, Feb 1964: "The Untold Story of Argo City"; Act No. 310/2, Mar 1964: "Supergirl's Rival Parents"). (TGSB)
Following their release from the Survival Zone, Alura and Zor-El take up residence in the Bottle City of Kandor (Act No. 310/2, Mar 1964: "Supergirl's Rival Parents"). They are present in the Kryptonian city when it is enlarged on the world of Rokyn (S No. 338, Aug 1979: "Let My People Grow!").
